There won’t be mass recruitment anytime soon – Goldfields Ghana tells host communities

The Regional Manager, Community Relations of Goldfields Ghana, Abdel Razak Yakubu, has entreated residents of the host communities of the Mine not to anticipate any mass recruitment by the Mine, anytime soon.

He explained that currently, there are limited work opportunities in the Mine.

This development, he said, has also affected the number of people employed by the contractors engaged by the Mine.

In view of this, he implored members of the mining communities not to expect to see many people being employed to work in the Mine in the months ahead.

In fulfilling its Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR), the Mine has over the years employed several people residing in its host communities.

This has among others helped to reduce the rate of unemployment in surrounding communities.

Mr. Yakubu noted that, although people will still be employed, the recruitment will not be on large scale as had been done in previous years.

He said since the beginning of the year 2020, Goldfields Ghana – Tarkwa Mine, through the Mine’s contractors, has employed some 227 people.

He disclosed that a significant proportion of those recruited have begun work, while others are undergoing their medicals.

Some others, he added, are also still at home pending further directives from the contractors.

He attributed the delay in the medical processes to COVID-19 formalities that have to be observed as well as the operating capacity of some contractors at the moment.

The Community Affairs Manager, who was addressing a stakeholder-meeting, however noted that the Mine will ensure that those employed; but are awaiting further directives from some contractors; will be engaged for other works when the need arises.
